Safety-Focused Arrow Sanitary on the Front Lines
Often overlooked as public responders: Garbage collectors are key part of public safety during COVID-19 pandemic.
A Waste Connections company, Arrow Sanitary has been serving the Portland-metro area since 1956. Arrow Sanitary Service has 100 solid waste professionals who take safety measures seriously. The health and safety of the public is our main priority. We are closely following the CDC, OSHA and WHO (World Health Organization) guidelines to keep our employees safe. Our company has also taken many additional precautionary measures to limit the potential spread of the virus.
“Now more than ever before it is critical to show our community how important garbage and recycling collectors are, especially during these times. My concern is the general public typically does not understand how much risk our teams are currently exposed to. However, we continue to work - day in and day out despite the risks and challenges we face as an industry. We are committed to continuing to provide garbage and recycling services to ensure the health and safety of our employees, and the communities we are fortunate to serve,” said Josh Brown, District Manager at Arrow Sanitary Service.
“Our most sincere gratitude goes out to our area's first responders (i.e. police, fire, paramedics, doctors, nurses and medical professionals across the board), who are responding to this crisis and working around the clock. And, just as grocery store employees are starting to receive much deserved praise and recognition for their indispensable response during this pandemic, we hope the public also understands that trash collectors across the country and right here in our own neighborhoods - are working around the clock to help keep our communities safe,” said Brown.
The presence of Coronavirus, or COVID-19, has raised questions about the disposal of material that may be exposed to the disease. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends routine procedures for managing coronavirus solid wastes. Solid waste handlers have strict disposal methods for materials potentially exposed to the disease. Arrow Sanitary leadership is closely monitoring the rapidly changing public health environment and is following CDC, OSHA, and WHO sanitary protocols.
Arrow Sanitary Service drivers, mechanics, and front line teams are wearing required personal protective equipment (including gloves and protective eyewear), following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations on proper handwashing and sanitization and taking other precautions in the midst of COVID-19 concerns.
"To date, none of our employees have been impacted directly by the virus, and hopefully that continues," said Brown.
